Visiting Academic Scholars and Economic Fellows

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking candidates for positions as Visiting Scholars and Economic Fellows in the Division of Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation. Division staff will be available for meeting with interested parties at this year’s meetings of the Financial Management Association and the American Finance Association.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Visiting Academic Scholars and Economic Fellows participate in research and analyses as members of the Division and provide economic guidance and research expertise to the Commission with respect to policy, enforcement, and regulatory initiatives. Opportunities exist to focus on specific policy/research areas or in litigation support. The Division is seeking candidates who have experience in areas including, but not limited to (and in no particular order): hedge funds, financial derivatives, market microstructure, credit ratings and credit risk, mutual funds, municipal securities, financial intermediaries, disclosure policy, corporate governance and finance, securities issuance, financial accounting, clearance and settlement, and litigation support. We are interested in tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as recent Ph.D. graduates who are interested in visiting positions for a year or more. The staff is expected to conduct high quality research that benefits the Commission, on par with that which is published in academic journals.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Ph.D. in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related area, plans to finish a Ph.D. before or shortly after starting employment, or industry experience commensurate with a doctoral degree.
  • Evidence of a strong research background or potential
  • Interest in the application of economic research and theory to issues of interest to the Commission.
  • Visiting Academic Scholars must already have a permanent position at a U.S. college or university. Economic Fellows do not.
  • While U.S. citizenship is generally required, certain situations may allow for non-U.S. citizens to be employed in permanent positions (such as persons lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B)). TERMS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Visiting Scholar positions are one-year appointments, renewable once.
  • Economic Fellows are appointed for a one-year term that is renewable up to a maximum of four years.
  • Visiting Scholars continue receiving salary and benefits from their universities, which are reimbursed for the academic salary and benefits, up to a maximum salary reimbursement of approximately $198,333. Compensation includes an allowance for moving expenses.
  • Economic Fellows are compensated according to qualifications on the SK scale. They receive benefits as if they were permanent government employees.

The Division of Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation was created in September 2009 to provide sophisticated analysis that integrates economic, financial, and legal disciplines. The Division’s responsibilities cover three broad areas: risk and economic analysis; strategic research; and financial innovation. Its responsibilities include providing economic analyses of proposed Commission actions and providing expertise in analytical approaches and methods in support of the Commission’s enforcement and examinations program. In its “think tank” and other roles, the Division is involved across the entire range of SEC activities, including policy-making, rule-making, enforcement, examination, and other matters.
