Job Title: Attorney- Adviser

Office : Office of Market Supervision

Location: Washington, DC

Series & Grade: SK 12 –SK13

Salary Range: $81,225- $149,571

The SEC's Division of Trading and Markets is seeking to hire several Attorney- Advisers for various offices in the Division. The Division has approximately 190 employees, the majority of whom are attorneys.

The Division is the principal group within the SEC that is responsible for administering the provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 that pertain to U.S. securities markets and certain participants in those markets, including broker-dealers.

Among other things, the Division:

  • drafts and interprets rules to protect investors from fraudulent and manipulative practices
  • sets standards for the operation of brokerage firms
  • oversees national securities exchanges and national securities associations
  • oversees the trading, clearing and settlement of securities.
  • works with other regulators, both nationally and internationally, on matters of mutual interest.

Job Summary:

The Attorney-Adviser positions are located in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Trading and Markets. Staff attorneys have the opportunity to play a significant role in shaping important legal and policy decisions that pertain to securities markets and certain market participants. The Division is organized according to subject areas and staff attorneys work on a variety of matters within a particular office's jurisdiction.

Responsibilities:

  • reviewing proposed rule changes submitted by regulated entities
  • drafting new rules, as well as amendments to, and interpretations of, existing Commission rules
  • drafting responses to requests for no-action or exemptive relief
  • consulting with other SEC offices or federal financial agencies
  • reviewing legislation; and working on special projects

Requisites:

  • Candidates should have strong writing, communication, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the statutes and regulations administered by the Commission, with a particular emphasis on the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, are especially desirable.
  • Applicants should have a J.D. from an accredited law school and be a member of the bar.

Education

  • J.D. degree required.

MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Grade 11: Applicant must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction). In addition, applicant must have one year of general post-J.D. experience.

Grade 12: Applicant must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction). In addition, applicant must have two years post J.D. experience, one year of which was in the specialty area of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Grade 13: Applicant must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction). In addition, applicant must have three years post J.D. experience, two years of which was in the specialty area of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
